the manual says that the AWD light will come on if different sized tires were mounted or tire pressures were too far different. Does it tell you when the center differential is working, like it would if one axel was slipping?

It sounds like it is simply a warning light, advising you if some condition (like those noted) could negatively impact the AWD system.
