Blown Strut 04 OBW

While getting my tires rotated today at a goodyear shop the tech pointed out a supposedly blown front strut-- oil leak etc. Of course they offered to replace it but I have the gold subaru warranty and it would be covered. Car is 04 OBW with 43k milles. Has anyone had a strut fail this soon? I dont want to get ripped if I pay deductible on extended warranty.

I have not, but that isn't to say your not the first. I would try rocking that corner of the car and compare it to the other. If there is no difference, I would say go on with life.

Around 60,000 I had one fail. It was a rear strut. Incidentally, failed struts are excellent at destroying tires, according to my mechanic who made a good profit off of me before I did some research.

It's well known in the U.K. motor trade that large tyre firm employees are encouraged to squirt oil on struts and shocks in order to sell more of them. If I were you , I'd wipe off the oil and check the strut over a couple of weeks to see if it leaks any more, or take the car to a mechanic you can trust. Tyre dealers are, in my (and many other peoples) opinion, about as honest as politicians.

Further to my previous post, I remember once going to a tyre place with a brand new tyre that I had bought at a bankruptcy sale, and the tyre fitting manager refusing to fit it to my spare wheel because he claimed that it was past it's sell-by date!

On the same note, I have checked CV boots the day before taking a car in for a tire change- noticing that they were very worn, but not yet broken or leaking, only to have the tire center call me and tell me they are torn, and so I drive down, and sure enough, ripped from end to end.

I immediately pulled the car and took my vehicle elsewear.

I'd be very reluctant to trust the diagnosis as reported by the original poster.

I brought the car to Subaru dealer today and they confirmed that the strut was blown. Unfortunately they dont stock the part and I have to go back. Supposedly it will be covered under the gold subaru extended warranty but I will confirm. BTW a couple was in who had a cracked windshield from the heating element
