Brake Service

I had the front brakes serviced&replaced on my '03 Legacy L SE Wagon six months ago at the local Subaru dealer and was charged $250 parts&labor. This past week, I am beginning to hear the wear indicators for my rear brakes. Before I bring my car back to the dealer, I want to make sure the $250 parts&labor is a reasonable price from the dealer. I've had other cars before, and when brought to an independent mechanic, can usually have the brakes serviced and replaced for $100 parts&labor. Thanks for any input.

The original brake pad kit with shims and grease should be about $60 from 1stsubaruparts.com.

I do not cut the discs unless they are badly worn out or warped, cutting them shortens the life of the disc and if improperly cut, new pads will wear out much faster. Around here they charge about $15 to cut a disc.

Replacing the pads should not take more than one hour and it only entails taking the tire off, removing a bolt, cleaning and reassembling using the new pads.

Good luck.
