the motor on my 07' 2.5i 5M starts to buzz around 4K rpms and the power drops of a lot. Only paid attention in 1st gear, since it is more noticeable there, and more of a problem. Sounds like the valves might be floating. Is this normal for the motor ? I was thinking of trying a cold air intake, to try to nudge the power up a bit higher, but not sure that would help now.

Get it to the dealer, maybe drive a different one while you're there to compare. I doubt the valves are floating but I would expect 4K to be near (or just the other side of) the peak torque point. Loss of power there and/or a strange noise seems wrong.
Have the dealer check it out.

drove the car and paid closer attention. Seems like pushing it harder in first, the problem isn't as noticeable, and maybe just feeling the torque dropping off, and engine noises at higher revs.
