1999 Forester lights blinking

I went off and left the ignition of the Forester on, and when I returned the battery was dead (it's the original battery in a car that was new in the fall
of 1998). I put the battery on the trickle charger overnight and immediately the parking lights (the amber ones in front and the red ones in back) and dashboard lights started blinking.
The lights are on for one second, off for one second, thirty cycles totaling a minute. Then they are off for ten seconds. Then it repeats.
Messing around with light controls does nothing. The car starts and runs, but the blinking continues.
Now I have the battery disconnected.
Can anyone suggest what's causing this peculiar behavior and how I can make it stop?

Try hitting one of the buttons on the remote. I think the security system does that if power is lost.

I should have mentioned that this car doesn't have a security system.

Hey! Great suggestion!
Since the car has no security system and using the ignition key had no effect, I didn't mess with the remote, which I don't carry one for this car anyway. But after you suggested it, I figured it couldn't hurt to try and sure enough that made the lights stop blinking.
Thanks.

Overnight.
Battery has given no trouble until I ran it down by leaving the ignition on. Having a low battery cause the lights to blink would be a strange design decision...
