Check engine light and stalling

We have a very elusive problem. I hope one of you has had the same and can give me some clues. The CEL light comes on, and the engine misfires until restarted. The code is P1507, which says Idle Air failsafe. We have replaced the idle air motor, the throttle sensor, the computer (twice), and triple checked all wiring and connections. We spent $ at two dealers who said they had fixed it by replacing sensors, but it repeated within half an hour. My local mechanic friend is tearing his hair out. Does this ound familiar to any of you? (not the mechanic tearing his hair out; I know that's familiar).

Good luck dealing with Subaru dealers, they never can seem to "duplicate the problem"

I would take it elsewhere and see if they can figure out the problem for you.

Does the misfire happen only at idle, or also when driving? The code makes it sound like it should only occur at idle.

I had a Honda that had a very intermittent idling problem at startup... turned out the idle air control valve was all gunked up... the local mechanic cleaned the valve up and the problem never returned.

Mine can. Slightest thing wrong with it, they do the diagnostics and do an excellent job. I suppose it's easy to snipe when only one side of the story is written about--and anonymously.

I have just encountered the identical problem on my 98 Subaru Forester. It is driving my mechanic and me crazy. Did you ever find the source of the problem and what did you do to repair it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Casper, and any one else with this problem, my mechanic found the gas cap seal was no good. He replaced the cap and the car now runs perfectly. We tried all the same things you did with sensors and the computer. Got the same cel code 1507 about Idle Air and throwing the car into Fail Safe mode when slowing down and then downshifting into 3rd gear. The dealers will attempt to sell you everything. Gas cap-$29.95

Still looking. Someone suggested a gas cap - we tried that first, and I just did again - no luck. If you get anywhere, please let me know, as will I for you. Thanks.

I wish it were that simple. We tried that first, and I just tried again, just in case. Our mecahnic says it's nothing to do with the evap system.

I'm just tuning in to this thread... On my '94 Legacy the CEL has recently started coming on (it goes off within a minute) and the engine has started surging. Oh yeah, when these things are happening there's a "clicking" sound (like a relay) coming from behind the dash (left side, I think).

Replacing the gas cap had no affect.

Follow the information in this link to retrieve the trouble code(s) that have been stored, this should point you to the cause of the problem. -

note that on a 94, which is OBDI, the gas cap is not an issue.OBDI systems do not monitor the integrity of the fuel tank andevaporative system as OBDII systems do. You could drive around all daywith your gas cap off and not set any codes.
