Fuel for Subaru Legacy Outback

Have recently bought a '99 Legacy Outback in the UK and wonder what fuel to use. Inside the filler 'flap' it says that only 'super plus' unleaded fuel be used. In the uk, this is 10% more expensive than regular unleaded fuel.

What happens if I use the regular fuel? Why should I use the 'Super plus'? Could I do any damage using regular?

Thanks

Dug

I have a '99 Legacy Outback (I'm in the US). I use most of the times regular fuel (87 octane, I believe) without any problems. In my owner manual it says to use at least regular unleaded fuel.

I've got a 2001 H6 Outback and run it on normal unleaded, and it runs fine. The engine management system should detect the type of fuel and adjust the engine as necessary.

Do you own an AWD BMW as well as the Outback? How do you like it? Does it employ torsen diffs?

I think you're joking, but in case you aren't, can you post the details of your analysis? A 30% increase seems a bit high.
