Impreza BSW 98 Clutch "scratching"

Hi everybody,

My 98 BSW (2.2L engine) has been annoying me with a "scratching clutch". I have over 162,000 kms (~100,000 miles) on it. The clutch engages and disengages smoothly, but the pedal feels "scratchy", and makes noise.

It's normally worse when the weather is cold, but it occurs in cool weather as well (I lived in Montreal, so I mean "cool", not "cold"). It has also gotten progresively worse. I'd like to know what it could be before I'm stranded somewhere with no way to change gears...

The symptoms are as follows (lately):

- pressing the clutch pedal results in a "friction" feeling, until it is fully depressed.

- Then it makes a scratchy sound for a few seconds (2-3 seconds or so)

- and then becomes quiet (ie normal). Lately it's been happening every time I change gears.

- then, I put it in gear, and slowly disengage, it makes the friction sound again.

At some point, I thought that it made this "friction" sound also when the engine was off, so I changed the clutch cable, but that didn't improve anything.

I've lived with this problem for some time, but it seems to be getting worse. I would very much appreciate any help you can give me!

Thanks and regards,

My old 88 honda crx did that. In fact i was playing around at a red light trying to figure out where the sound was coming from, and hit the car in front of me (at .005 mph and stalling my car). OOPS i'm in gear...LOL. ANYWAY, we changed the cable, as you did, noise still there. We changed the cheesy plastic bushing they used at the pivot point of the clutch pedal arm. Same noise. It was what i DIDNT want it to be...the throwout bearing. I drove it for 64,000 more miles before I gave it away. Hope this helps.
