Impreza - Right Front Wheel HOT!!!

So I am cruising down the highway in my 97 Impreza Wagon and everything seems fine. Then I go to slow down to make a turn and the front end makes all sorts of racket under braking like the front discs are warped. But I just had them turned and there really is no shimmy in the steering wheel while braking. When I get out of the car, I smell something hot. I check the temp of the driver's side front wheel and it is nominal. But the passenger side front wheel is almost burning hot. Now this was happening before the brake work and I thought I might have a sticking caliper. But the pads were worn very normally and comparably to the other side. How can this be?

Any opinions?

Have you checked the wheel bearings?

Just a thought

Yes. Take the car immediately to a competent mechanic before the front wheel comes off or locks up at 60 MPH, and you kill yourself or some other innocent person.

Wouldn't they make noise just driving around or turning? I will lift the car up and check for play before pulling the wheel.

Good advice. It wouldn't hurt to check to see if the lug nuts are loose first though.

G'Day. The suggestion of a wheeel bearing is a good one. My wife's old Justy went in for a brake job last year and they succeeded in wrecking a perfectly good front wheel bearing while they worked on the disks! Of course they had to fix it as it had just had a 6 month roadworthiness test OK, except for a brake. After that she always takes it to our, very good, local Subaru specialist.
