My Impreza sport - 1997 - has a mad speedometer - there is a really weird whizzing noise from the dash and its goes up to 140mph and then goes back to normal again for a little while before doing it again.
Its booked into a garage in 2 weeks time - but I would like to know if anyone else has had this - cost of parts ? and is there available a Haynes manual type diagram for the dash console so I can try and look myself?

I've seen this on a car I had years ago and it was the speedo cable. It is a mechanical cable that can do what you describe if it runs out of lubrication. I disconnected it, sprayed some WD40 in the connection and allowed it to soak. It was fine for years after that.
Not sure what type of speedo arrangement a 97 impreza has, but if is is not electronic, it is probably a similar arrangement. A decent repair manual should be able to tell you how to re-lubricate it. Remco
A 97 has an electronic arrangement, then? If so, forget what I mentioned about relubing.
