Lift Gate Supports for 2000 Outback

Jan 26, 2007 5 Replies

Hey all. I am looking for the back gate gas charged lift supports for my 2000 outback wagon. I haven't been able to find them anywhere in the internet, and the dealer here is charging $90 for them. I've seen a million and one of them for a ton of other cars, but nobody seems to have one for my car. Has anyone found these anywhere besides a dealer?

(It's driving me nuts because all the ones at checker or napa are ~$25 so I'm having a hard time paying $90 for one).

Thanks!

A junkyard.

Look under "Used Auto Parts" in your phone book. These places rarely have web sites.

Suggest you try Auto Zone or Advanced Auto Parts. Pretty sure both stores carry replacement gas charged tail gate and hood lift supports at a reasonable price.

Be wary of the salvage yard hatch struts if you do go that route, as what may seem fine in the yard will often time fail the first bit of cold weather you get, leaving you with a hatch on your head. I know I've dropped the gate on my head dozens of times. :-/ Autozone quoted me $110 to special order a pair that would fit my former '89 GL Wagon ( RIP )-; ). I opted not to pay for replacements. Course, if you don't mind going a bit more redneck, a broomhandle cut to size works in a pinch. (-;

I've been doing the 'redneck' thing for a little while now, and have decided to try and find some new ones. It just hurts paying ~$90 for one of these things when I walk around all the auto parts stores and they're 25 (but don't fit). Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm gonna keep looking for a bit more, but it's looking like I'm gonna have to bit the bullet on the OEM one from subaru.
