Can anyone recommend a reliable Subaru mechanic in or around New York City?

Not in the city limits exactly, but not too far- North Coast Subaru in Glen Cove LI, about 15 miles east of the city line. Metric Subaru in Huntington LI, about 25 miles east of the city line.
Both are dealers with very highly regarded service departments.
