On/Off switch on base of steering column

I recently came across an on/off toggle switch at the base of the steering column on my 98 Legacy Outback Limited.

I bought the car used so I'm not sure if it is an after-market add-on.

Anyone know if this is a standard item and what it controls?

Possibly the switch for the parking lights if it's the one I'm thinking of.

No - I think you're referring to the switch on the top of the steering column. The on/off switch I'm asking about is on the underside of the column.

Hmm. Not sure what that would be. You could try creating an account on Subaru's page:

They've got owner manuals there, hopefully covering your model.

...about that: I only got the index of the manual from that site. Is the full manual a commercial (pay to download) item?

The little switch is attached under the steering wheel about where the steering column intersects the plastic portion of the dashboard - more or less between the driver's knees. I can see that wires from the switch run into a white 5"-square box located among all the other wires above the pedals. This little box has numerous wires running in and out of it.

My remote starter system has a kill switch around that location too.

Chris, you mentioned that your remote starter has a similar button...I suspect that a previous owner of my car did indeed install a remote starter. There's a hand written note in the owner's manual on how to operate the remote starter.

When I bought the car I wasn't given the control for a remote starter, so I don't know if it actually has it or whether or not it would work if I could track down a controller.

I replaced my neighbor's battery yesterday. When I tried to attach the ground, the alarm went off. Her H>>
