From your description of which lights get switched on, it sounds "positioning lighting" is another term for "parking lights".

The difference is, the headlight switch only gets power with the key on. The toggle switch on the steering column has constant power. The first position of the headlight switch, and the toggle switch both turn on the parking lights, but only the toggle can turn them on with the key off/not in ignition.
Clear as mud?
Nope, crystal clear. Let's just hope I never hit that button by mistake as I'm putting the car-club on!

hehe... The "parking lights won't turn off" thread seems to pop up here quite often. Usually people bump it as they are cleaning their car. :)

When I picked up my Subie the dealer said "see that switch on the steering column? Yah, don't touch it. It's evil".

The wife is out in the Subaru at the moment so I can't check, but isn't it the case that, in addition to the above, the steering column switch does not turn on the instrument panel lights? That would (a) not waste battery power when you use the positioning lights as intended, i.e. leaving them on while the car is parked, and (b) make it harder to tell from inside the car that the switch is on by mistake.
Since you mentioned you had the club I thought I'd like to add that they're not much of anti-theft device. My brother (a mechanic, if it matters) showed me how good they are. He put on a the car's steering wheel. Hit it with a torch - club survived took a grinder to it - club survived Took a hacksaw to it - club survived Took said hacksaw and cut through the steering wheel in 30 seconds and tossed the club out the window.
The club itself is good but until they make a stronger steering wheel its worthless. BTW, It took only a few seconds to cut it with a $5 set of bolt- cutters from Kmart.
If your insurance company gives you a discount for it or you use it for that 'warm fuzzy feeling', more power to you.
BTW, the switch is evil. And if you need to turn the DRL off temporarily just pull up >
The only thing I can say about that statement is it must have come originally from Bob Hope. That's the funniest line I've heard yet, on any subject. :-)))

OK, I finally thought to check while I was out in the car, and you're right, the rocker switch doesn't turn on the dash lights.
