Service Program WWWP-99. Is it a big deal?

I got a letter from Subaru about "a special conditioner be added to the engine cooling system of certain 1999 to 2002 model ... to prevent a possible external coolant leak in engine cylinder head gaskets."



I searched google, but I still don't have an idea about how bad this is. My questions are


1) Do I definitely have to do it? How bad it is?
2) I just did my 90K maintenance at a non-dealer shop. In the future when I flush the coolant, do I have to go back to dealer to add this stupid conditioner?

Yes. Definitely do it. It is supposed to prevent leaking headgaskets, a very costly repair.

I just got an e-mail from Subaru on my '01. Already had the head gaskets replaced under warranty in December at 41K miles. You get the sealer once, free. After that you need to buy it from Subaru. Do a search on head gaskets & coolant leaks.

You could make an arguement that under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act that Subaru must supply this free until 100k miles, since they specify Subaru sealer and no other alternative.

I will go to dealer to do it. One more thing. Is it easy to spot the leaking head gaskets? I will ask dealer to check it. I am technically challenged. What is the symptom from user's perspective? Thanks.
