1993 Caravan, transmission not shifing sometimes

Hi, here it is!! We have a caravan (3.3L) 3 spd auto no OD.we have been pretty good about maintaining but we don't know what is wrong this time. Sometimes it doesn't want to shift out of first gear. If you shut the van off and restart it, it will shift normally. We replaced the speed sensor a while back and haven't had luck. Any ideas?

Thanks

I didn't know you could get a 3.3 with the 3 speed transaxle. If I'm wrong I genuinely want to know...

The 3 speed hydraulic shift trans would likely have a bad governor to cause staying in 1rst gear. It sounds from the fault description like you have a 4 speed unit though. Anyone have any input on Caravan trans/engine options?

Are you sure this is a 3 speed transmission? I didn't think that Crysler ever coupled the 3.3L engine to the 3 speed. I had thought it was alsways coupled to the 4 speed computer-controlled transmission.

If yours is a 4 speed A604/41TE then you need to take it to Chrysler and have them scan the transmission with a scan tool. Your symptoms are consistent with the trans computer of this trans putting it into limp mode. If the computer ever puts the trans into limp mode then it will always store a code.

Hey Ted, I guess the OP isn't interested enough in his problem to reply. Makes you wonder why people post in the first place. Oh well...

Yeah really. But then some folks post something unanswerable and start complaining when they don't have any bites after a day or so.

Meanwhile, I'm going to go try to wash all those memories of trans services on chrysler minivan transaxles out of my head. Again.

Then you should be able to get the CHECK ENGINE light to blink out codes with a jumper wire, or by turning the ignition key to run a few times. Not sure the exact procedure for a Caravan.

If I can do KOEO on this van then I'll put off the mechanic. Is it worth buying a OBDI reader?

I just read that KOEO won't work, but I found a post with someone else encountering the same stuff that I have been encountering and some stuff I haven't. Looks like I have some parts to replace, namely another speed sensor, and a neutral safety switch. Thanks so much everyone.

Talk to the people that answered your post in stead of telling yourself how to throw parts at it.:grinno:

Proper testing and proper info is needed before they can help you. Like Tips on getting a good answer to your questions. People trying to answer your question do not have a crystal ball. So give them all of the info you have like year make and model and engine and transmission and mileage. Also cars engine and transmission service history or any recent repairs or problems. Also a description of your problem and what it is doing or not doing. If you have codes give up the code no. And remember a code does not say replace the part but only points to the problem that you have to check out. So to better help you give up all of the info you have on it. MT
