After bearing preload adjustment per nissan specs there is still considerable axial end play. Could this this be worn bearings or possibly something else, and if so what?

some vehicles spec bearing end play when cold so they're not over-tight when hot. what is the spec on yours? how did you set it? and do you mean the axle bearing? the ball joints? what exactly?
