While driving, the tranny will shift from first and then hold while the engine revs before sometimes shifting to the next gear. What are some of the things to check besides the oil level and filter? Some say it could be the vehicle speed sensor because my tripminder and odometer also are not working.

If the speed sensor has a problem, that will definitely affect the transmission. Could also be the neutral safety switch (known as the "Manual Lever Position Sensor" in Ford parlance).
