95 Cougar turn signal rapid blink

My 95 Cougar turn signal has a rapid blink when signalling a right turn -- the dash board indicator and front light don't light though the rear does blink rapidly.

If I ease the multifinction switch to a right side lane change indication, All three right side lights light and blink normally. The left indicators all work well.

I figured the rapid blink pointed to a bulb problem until I discovered that "lane change" worked okay. What suspects does this behavior indicate?

Thank you, Frank

___________________________ That's a modern car's way of telling you one of the blinker bulbs is out - one bad bulb still allows partial turnsig operation. Time to replace the right-front bulb.

The mid-90's were notorious for "multi-function switch" problems. That's Ford-talk for the turn signal switch. Some folks have reported luck cleaning the switch with electronic contact spray. Others say replacement is the only answer. Mine is getting flaky, the slow wipers need a jiggle to get going but I'm too cheap to replace it until it gets worse.

I hope this is helpful - PoD

PoD,

Thank you for the note, I think it's time to dig out the Chilton book to see how to get to the MF switch [without setting off the air bag] and doing a contact cleaning or wire inspection.

You can probably squirt cleaner in it by only removing the column cover. Good thought about watching out for the air bag, tho. Good Luck!

PoD -

Quick followup: Removing the tilt cover, key cylinder, and multifunction switch was a snap, I had no contact cleaner but a Q-Tip (r) and some alcohol rubbed against the contacts worked! Thank you for the sage advice!

Glad to hear it was successful. I need to get into mine. Caig makes a superb cleaner that leaves a protective coat and a bit of lube called R-5. I've got some around here somewhere...
