Adding an airbag? 92 Astro

Hi all, I'm wondering if it's at all possible to add a driver's side airbag to a 92 Chevy Astro. The 93's had a different steering wheel and have an airbag, but the 92's don't. I know anything can be done if you throw enough money at it, but is this a viable addition? I would guess it would involve a new steering wheel, airbag and control module at bare minimum. Maybe yanking the front bag set (both sides) and module from a



93? Is the 92-to-93 wiring involved very different? Any of you even done this mod?

Oh yeah, drinks are in the fridge - help yourself. ;)

This isn't a practical change. They airbag system is pretty complex... Even if you somehow got it done there is only one way to test it out and it isn't pretty.

Only if you knew exactly what was changed on the vehicle to accomodate the airbag system (could be things like the interior/dash panel structure, body pressure relief vents, restraint system, even some of the body structure..) could you do this properly/safely. Adding the parts could get a working airbag system, but it could be ineffective/dangerous if other parts of the vehicle are not designed to accommodate it.

You're right. See the Grinch movie with Jim Carrey for an example of a poorly designed "add on" airbag system.

That reminds me of the "airbag" in the Wagon Queen Family Truckster that deployed in the Griswald's driveway in National Lampoon's Vacation. Haha! A while back, I actually came across one of the Wagon Queen Family Truckers on eBay that they used while filming. If I recall correctly, there were some 15 of those built for the movie and most were destroyed. The one I saw was claimed to run, but it was not in very good cosmetic condition (as if it was even when it was new with that lovely metallic pickle baby puke green).
