Air conditioning power

Does anyone know how much power an average air conditioning compressor absorbs when operating?


In the Ford AC classes i went to they told us the typical compressor uses about 3 to 5 hp but i forgot at what ambient temp, rpm, and output temp.

Paul's figure of 3-5 hp is probably correct, for most cars. In older vehicles, and some larger ones even today, it can go as high as 8-10.

A friend of mine accidentally ran his Mustang GT at the 1/4 mile drag strip in 16.2 seconds. He usually runs 16 flat and then he realized he had the AC on. Some generic math says 16/16.2 = 1.234% slower. His mustang is roughly 250hp so 250*.01234 = 3.1hp which is in spec with what Paul and Fly said. That's IF my math/logic is correct which is always suspect.

It depends on the vehicle.About 4 horsepower and up.Some older models use up to about 14 horsepower, or so I once read in an auto magazine back in the 1970s. cuhulin

What I find suspect is his rational for losing .2 seconds in the quarter mile. It sounds like he runs a pretty typical and fairly stock GT, to which I wonder why the wide open throttle A/C cut command , something Ford has been using since they started using electronic engine controls, wasn't working that day. Certainly he accelerates WOT throughout the run, correct?

0,2 seconds can be lost or gained rather easily between two runs due to other factors. I dont see this datoid as being significant, as presented.

The water run-off from his evaporator case got on his rear tires? lol

That's genius! While sitting, waiting for the green light, he puddled up a bunch of water that lost him .2 seconds from lack of traction!

So, the evaporator was acting like a dehumidifier. The World is a Stage and we are all little Actors. cuhulin
