auto transmission fails

recently my automatic transmission 87 town car wouldnt work when it got up to 3rd or 4th speed. engine races but no power to wheels. you have to coast to a slow speed and start over again.

Sounds like your OD band is broken which is a common failure. Also, that model has a plastic bushin for the throttle pressure attachment to the throttle lever. It has been replaced with an updated metal one and there is a TSB out on that. The bushing should be readily available at your dealer or a good trans shop. If this is the problem, the trans may go back to work after replacement and ajustment of the linkage. If you keep driving it this way, it is a sure bet that a not yet failed trans will die shortly as this cable controls the line pressure in the trans. The thrans will have low pressure and burn up because of slippage.
