best place to buy replacement engine for 1999 ford taurus

I fried the engine in my 1999 Ford Taurus (it is a 3.0L DOHC 24 Valve). So far I've gotten qoutes (parts and labor) from:

1) Ford Dealership $4300 reconditioned w/warrenty parts & labor 2) Tuffy 2500 ??? Could not follow up for details 3) ind mech 2000 14K Motor w/90 D parts only warranty 4) ind mech 1200 100K Motor 5) ind mech 1700 83K motor 6) ind mech 2000 63K Motor

I think I want to go with the $2000 and 14K motor. It is within my budget, etc. Should I ask to see proof that the motor is 14,000 mi? Is there any cheaper way to get a reconditioned motor? I called Jasper and they quoted me $3376.08 for a reconditioned one with 36 month/75000 mile warrent parts & labor.

What is wrong with the existing engine? You may be able to repair for less $.

Most modern salvage yards pull the engines and put them on pallets and shelves. So, you may not have the option of seeing the car it came out of and check the mileage. Plus even if the engine is warranted, it won't cover the R/R labor. Too bad its not a vulcan. You could have got one of those for 1/2 the price that your looking at.

What happened to your duratec? I have been wondering about the long term durability of the 24 valve engines.

Here is my opinon - sell the car for parts or more if it runs. Buy a similar car with a good engine. Drive on. A 1999 Taurus in good condition should cost around $5000 (or less). The bad Taurus you have should be worth something - say $500, probably more. At the worst it should cost you $4500 to just swap cars and avoid all the screw ups associated with rebuilt or used engines. For $9000 you could get a

2002.

and found a number of engines from a high of about $3000 down to $300 or so. Lots of them in the $1000 range.

You should be able to get someone to swap it in for you (maybe even the junkyard) for $500-700. Maybe less if times are slack.

If the car were running, it would bring more than $500.

The existing engine seized-up because either the oil pump failed, or somehow the oil level got too low. I do check the oil, and the oil light was not on, except it did come on exactly at the same time I heard a quiet screeching. We did try to break it free and start it, but that didn't work.

I ended up going with a mechanic who used an engine locator service and found me an engine for $750 + shipping with 14,000 miles. Total cost to install is $2000. My car is in excellent condtion and loaded, it has leather seats, premium sound system, excellent body, and is very clean overall otherwise. I really don't want to sell it.

Wow that is cool..Thanks I can use that in the future - that is probably what my mechanic did. His price seems in line with what is on there.
