damper (shock absorber) query

Most modern dampers are non-linear. They claim to have a multitude of valves, so that damping is different on up and down stroke. Also the damping is different in the centre position to the ends of travel. Is the damping more or less at the unloaded centre position?

Generally the damping is less around the center position to provide a smoother ride on small bumps. Off that position it gets much firmer to keep things under control on larger bumps that make the wheels move more. Some have velocity sensitive valves so smaller less violent wheel movements get a softer response but fast hard hits to the wheel get a much firmer response.
