Diagnosing carburetor "float" issues

Hi Gang,

I'm new to the group. I'm trying to resolve some carburetor issues with a 1981 Toyota pickup (22RE, 4 speed) with a camper conversion on it.

Here's the scoop: The vehicle is not passing emissions due to high levels of carbon monoxide at higher RPMs. It's fine at idle. There are several possible diagnoses for this problem, and one is that the carburetor float has become saturated.

Here are my questions:

If the float level looks right in that little glass window on the front of the carburetor, is there anything else I need to do before ruling out the float as the source of this problem?

Does the engine need to be warm and/or running to get an accurate reading this way?

Am I correct in presuming that the vehicle should be on level ground?

Thanks!

Unless the float level has been reset, a correct fuel level indicates a good float. But floats are cheap. If you rebuild the carb, change the float.

Float level is independent of temp, for all practical purposes.

Yes, within reason.

If it has a cat, I'd be suspicious of that. Rex in Fort Worth
