22r Double Row Timing Chain

I see references on the net to swapping out the timing chain before it fails and wrecks your 22r engine.

Some folks advocate upgrading to a double row timing chain with metal guides.

I have a 1981 pickup with a double row timing chain, presumably the orginal. The vehicle has over 120,000 miles on it.

Do I need to worry about this timing chain breaking like the later, single row models? Or I can I rest easy?

i think that the 22r's came with the double row, but the 22re (efi) engines came with the single row and plastic guides. maybe by 120k miles it's worth taking it apart, but from what i know, you don't need to worry about it until you start to hear a ticking sound in the front of the engine. it's particularly notcable right after start up because the oil pressure isn't up yet, and the chain it's properly tensioned. the timing chain and plastic guides lasted 228k miles in my 22re, so you may still be fine.

I sold my '88 with single row chain at over 200k miles with original chain. YMMV.

I've seen a double-row chain let go, too, but it is safer than a single row.

I've seen them go on these engines at 160,000, and I've seen them go at

260,000! No real way to tell, and unfortunately, unlike the Nissan 2.4L, I've been told by people it has happened to, it doesn't make any noise before it lets go! At least the Nissan makes a rattling noise well before it lets go!

I've also had someone tell me it will make a hell of a racket at start-up as it's on it's way out.

Any confirmation on this one?
