I think many of the people who respond to questions in this forum may have trouble understanding your description of the problem. Are you saying that when you turn the ignition switch to the start position, the engine seems to be cranking (That is the starter motor is working and it is spinning the crankshaft), but the engine does not start up and continue running when you return the ignition switch to the run position?

If that is the case, there are too many possible causes to list them all here. More information would be required to narrow down the cause. Some simple things to check.

  1. Do you have sufficient fuel in the tank?

  1. Does this vehicle have a carburetor or is it fuel injected. Is it a gasoline or a diesel engine?

  2. On a gas engine you could remove the cable from a spark plug and hold the boot close to metal on the engine while an assistant tries to start the car. Does it have a spark arcing from the plug wire to the metal?

The answers to these questions may help narrow down the possible causes or your symptom. post back.
