This is simplistic and generally thoroughly incorrect. A reference to facts that confirm any inferior quality or longevity between an API SL oil of 5w30 compared to a 10w30 or even a 0w40 would be nice. I don't believe you will be able to oblige.

It may thicken or thin depending on the type of contamination, its level of deposition of contaminants, the engine model and the whole duty cycle that the oil and the engine is subject to. Nothing is just black or white and to state that thinning oil is the result of blow by is wrong. Blow by might well result in thickening oil in some engines.

You can if you want to. Most cars that are sold for the North American market can use either one. Should you, well there might be a very slight gas mileage difference between the two but you might not notice so flip a coin and buy a good quality oil that meets your vehicle's specs. As for the people that like to argue against 20W50 oil, keep up the good work. The more you trash it the cheaper I can buy it. I would not use it in an overhead cam but pushrod engines do quite well.
