Hydraulic Jack Slow to Rise

Jun 03, 2008 5 Replies

Hi all,

I have a 2 ton hydraulic jack that worked perfectly for over 10 years. But this Spring when I tried to use it, I found that the first

2/3 of the pump travel doesn't do anything, only the last 1/3 is doing any actual pumping. The first 2/3 of the travel offers no resistance, while the last 1/3 is normal.

Does it just need an oil refill or something more serious?

Thank you

Sounds like the O-rings are shot. See if you can get a rebuild kit.

Viagra...

Actually it sounds like either the pump orings or a sticky valve. If it's a better brand you should be able to find rebuild parts.

It *sounds* like its low on oil, but it could be an internal seal leaking too. I get a little nervous whenever a hydraulic jack shows any odd behavior, because if an internal seal blows it can drop the car like a rock. IF a fluid fill fixes it, use it carefully until you determine if there's a leak. And of course always use jackstands with any jack, but particularly a hydraulic.

I own three forty ton hydraulic bottle jacks. They work just fine, but they are slowwwwwww. cuhulin
