ntermittant starting problem: sometimes when I turn the key I only hear a click. If I turn it several more times, it starts. Havent tried a different starter yet, as it cranks good when it connects and doesnt " Click " The last starter I tried The charging system, battery seems to be ok. I also cleaned the positive and negative contacts on the battery.

Guys, does it sound like the problem is the starter?? or something else?

Please help. BTW, the tercel is automatic.

Check both ends of both battery cables for corrosion. Sounds like a intermittent starter solenoid.

this may sound like a dumb question, but i cannot locate the starter on this car!!! let alone the solenoid. :*(

any idea??

See rec.autos.misc and a current thread there, subject "Does this sound like a bad starter?"

Sounds like you and the fellow I responded to are in about the same boat. You might want to tune in.

Start at the battery. Find the positive post. That's the one with the big + or "POS" or both on or near it. There's probably a big red cable on it, but if somebody got crazy with aftermarket gear, it could be black, or just about any other color. Whatever color it is, follow the cable from the positive post. The other end of it is (or at least, it SHOULD be) attached to the starter. More correctly, the other end of the cable is attached to the solenoid, which is in turn attached to the starter.

Now you know where both of 'em are! :)

(And on some vehicles, figuring that out can be the hardest part of dealing with a starter)
