Powertrain warranty issue---please help

Hi Guys-

I have a '99 Altima, and yesterday while I was changing my spark plugs I noticed that when I removed the first plug (all the way to the left) there was oil all over the spark plug and the boot of the wire, the other 3 were fine. Well, the car is still under the 6/60,000 powertrain warranty. But when I called the stealer service department and told her what was goin on and I wanted to make sure that this will be covered under the warranty because the problem is IN the powertrain. The response I got from her was weird. She told me that they will charge me $55 to check it out, and if its a warranty issue then the charge will be disregarded. Now im scared, I asked her weather the valve cover gasket was under warranty and she said it was, but she said it could be some spark plug hole seal in the head (I cant really remember) and she doesn't know if that's covered under warranty. I think that's jus BS, if it has anything to do w/ the engine, then it should be covered under the powertrain warranty..right!??! I mean..the frekin oils coming out of the engine!! What do you guys think? Will/should this be covered under warranty? what could be the problem w/ the engine? Is it serious? About 2 years ago, I mentioned this to them, I had black soot all around the valve cover, and I asked em to check it out, they said it was ok, and the performance was never as good as my friends altima.

I really don't know how they could justify not covering that problem under warranty, regardless of what exactly is leaking. I haven't heard of a dealer charging up-front for a repair on an in-warranty vehicle either, that sounds quite odd to me.

I don't imagine the problem is serious - I don't know that specific engine but probably all that needs to happen is for the valve cover to be taken off and either the valve cover gasket and/or the spark plug hole seal replaced..

ok, I got word that it is the valve cover gasket and will be covered. Im asking them to change the spark plug wires as well cuz they were drenched with oil and the car always did feel sluggish compared to my firends altima (i'm on record about complaning about that and the fact the valve cover had too much oil around it whenthe car was new). they said they will clean it out and then the mechanic will determine. Wont the wire foul up after almost 45k+ miles of oil in it?

I would be inclined to ask them to change the wire as well - I don't think oil would really hurt the wire too much, but it can't be good for it either.

How many dealers did you call? I mean the fee sounds like a scam, so I'd shop around.
