setting the timing on my 91 mustang gt

I just bought a 91 Mustang GT and it appears that the timing is off. It has slow throttle response and pops a little in slower acceleration and in deceleration. Does anyone know what the timing should be set at or if that is not the problem do you know what it could be? Thanks
