slightly OT gasoline pricing

Nov 02, 2013 14 Replies

I understand the psychology of $x.99 pricing. I don't understand why almost all gas pricing (Oregon) ends in an odd number. Asked my ARCO station manager and withdrew from the discussion after being told that there were more odd numbers than even. Ivan Vegvary

so you're saying gas prices are never $3.18/gal only $3.17, or $3.19??

can't say this is done on the east coast if this is the case

Don't forget the additional 9/10th of a cent..... So your odd numbers actually turn out even...

$2.99.99 for one gallon of gas equal $3.00 for that gallon of gas, if you don't have to pay state sales taxes. Am I right?

I don't know the answer, but here is my gas usage for the last 12 months from 3 nearby stations in the Houston area:

15 odd, 10 even, excluding the trailing 0.009.

$3.339 Oct 2012 $3.099 $3.069 $2.969 $3.089 $3.099 $3.299 $3.379 $3.549 $3.469 $3.429 $3.299 $3.279 $3.279 $3.279 $3.239 $3.499 $3.399 $3.319 $3.399 $3.379 $3.189 $3.029 $2.969 $2.789 Oct 2013

please pursue that discussion and report back. Ask him to list all of the even and odd numbers for us. I simply must understand morons to survive one more week on this planet.

Oh wait, maybe he meant "in my box of giant numbers that I can put up on the signs, I have more of the...."

Correct and If you buy 100 gallons you get a penny rebate.

OK, I'll bite. What kind of "number" is 2.99.99?? Do you mean a gas price of $2.999?

ce of $2.999?

orus +

Google,,, Gas station prices $2.99.99 Where it says, OK, This Needs To Stop madd entips.com I don't kn ow what I mean anymore. Maybe I need to go fishing?

Ok, you guys got off topic. I meant the advertised price, second number after the decimal. That would be called the 'hundredths' place. Forget the 99 tenthousandths of the dollar. Ignoring that, prices almost always show as $3.19, $3.21, $3.37 etc. I shouldn't even say almost. It is always. Ivan Vegvary

town? city?, state? country?

my last gas receipt says " @ $ 4.239/G " (sic)

Lahaina, HI, USA

Do I remember what the sign said? no. GW

Current lowest gas price per gallon of regular gas around here is $2.87 My van's gas tank is about half full. I will fill it up this week and pour some Stabil into the gas tank.

I still get change back from a $5 bill when I fill the tank on my regular commuter when the gauge drops to "E" (which really means 0.5 gallon reserve left in the 1.6 gallon tank).

I'm paying $3.979/gal. I thought I was doing pretty good. Ah shucks.
