Makes sense. You don't need AC in Siberia, but you might need really good heat. I can see a need for standard AC when you're selling to Cuba but that market is gone now.
The engine is the best part of the Lada. It's not very fast, and you might find casting sand in the oil pan for the first few oil changes, but it's impossible to kill and even drunken kulaks can fix it.
