Toyota Engine Heatup during Idling

Hi,

My Toyota Cressida GLX'91 with 136k Miles on it heats up while idling after around 20 minutes of drive. But when the car starts moving again the temperature reading goes below the halfway mark again. The temperature increase during idling is rather quick till it hits the red mark. I tried checking the electric fan in front of the radiator, but in a halt position i've never seen it work. The engines doens't show any signs of overheating like smokin comin out or stuff. Any help? Is it the gauge or the fan itself? or maybe the water pump?

Thanks,

ZB

sounds like the fan is not working properly. check the thermoswitch that controls it, and/or manually force it on by turning on the A/C and see if that makes the temp. drop. Or does the fan not come on with the A/C? in that case maybe the fan itself is bad.

Don't know about Toyota, but many cars have a relay that actuates the fan motor. So in addition to the fan itself, the relay could be bad. I had to replace a fan relay on a Mazda with same symptoms.
