Trying to isolate engine/transmission noise

Hey all,

I'm hoping someone can assist me with a recent problem. I have a 2004 Scion xB 5-spd manual with 150k miles on it. Recently I have noticed a whine when driving. Usually the whine manifests itself when I'm traveling above 60mph. I initially thought it could be a wheel bearing or possibly CV-joint; yet when I engage the clutch the sound goes away. Unable to be in the engine bay while traveling @ 60 (LOL); I rev'd the engine with the transmission in neutral but I couldn't hear anything. So if I can only hear the noise while traveling at 60 and gears engaged; could this be a clutch or transmission issue? I haven't noticed any power loss or engine stalling/vibrations (beyond that of an engine with 150k on it); so I don't think it is an engine problem.

Any ideas? This power-train is shared by the Scion xA and Toyota Echo. The box has gotten me to work for 150k so far; I'd hope for it to continue for another 50k-100k. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Daniel

Okay, so you disconnect the engine and transmission and the noise stops. Do you hear the noise if you go down to 4th gear and let the clutch out? How about when you take your foot off the gas at 60 with the clutch engaged, do you hear it then or does it stop?

You did check the gear oil level in the transmission right? Could be something as simple as low oil.....

Well now I hear the noise if the clutch is in or out. Specifically; when coming to a stop sign I depress the clutch & brake to hear a winding down sound. Almost if I was running on a flat. Yet, all of the tires are at the right pressure. The car just seems louder. I'm wondering if the clutch is giving?

In summary; there is a winding/whirring sound when accelerating and de- accelerating. The sound is there on de-acceleration with either clutch in or out (easier to hear when clutch is pressed in and no engine noise). Has to be the moving assembly as the whirring sound is not present when parked. I can't check the fluid level as I live in an apartment and they don't allow any types of repairs in parking lot. I'm taking the car in to my friend's shop so he can diagnose. I will report the cause when I hear word. Hope it isn't expensive. :)

Aggressive tire tread and missing door seal?

Nah, this is more than that. The seals are intact and the tires are good. Even the wife heard the noise when I took her for a spin (and verified my sanity).

When that moan turns into a groan replace the front wheel bearings and repack the rear wheel bearings and cv joints - good for another 50,000 mi.

Well, had a shop look at it and it sucks. Transmission bearing going out. Time for a rebuild. Joy.
