The DeLorean car. I saw one today in a driveway. It had been painted black, and the guy was stripping it back to stainless steel. Must be a labour of love, as the house was a run-down hovel.
I had a look online, and there are 9 for sale, 1 or which is painted red.

The main reason they got painted was due to body damage. For a while you couldn't get replacement panels because the companies assets were locked up due to the bankruptcy and drug investigations and many body shops don't have the metal working skills to get a mangled stainless panel perfect. So they would get the panels "close" and fill and paint the car. I have seen a couple where only the damaged panel was painted a silver to try to hide it.
