1999 Camry Exclamation point light came on today

Exclamation point light on the dash came on today while driving. Car was warmed up. Parking brake was totally off. Brake fluid level was full up. After parking the car for 4 hours and restarting, the light was OFF. Then, after driving for 10 minutes, the light came on again, and stayed on. Possibilities??? Remember, all possible movements of parking brake, on and off, had no effect on the light. Brake fluid reservoir was fully filled. Brakes still worked fine. All brake lights were fine. Rear disk pads are originals. Car has 149,000 kilometres on it--90,000 miles.

There are a few possible causes:

There is a float attached to a switch in the brake fluid reservoir cap. When the fluid level drops, the float drops, which turns on a switch to illuminate the brake warning light. If the float is stuck in the down position for whatever reason, the light will be on. If the brake fluid has never been changed in 11 years, it could theoretically have absorbed enough moisture to freeze enough to keep the float from moving. A brake fluid flush may help.

The plunger switch on the parking brake lever/pedal may be gummed up, particularly if you have the lever parking brake instead of the pedal type. The lever in the center console tends to collect soda and coffee spills. WD-40 will loosen up the gumminess and displace any moisture. Wipe off any grease of gunk on the button on the switch, give it a shot of WD-40 and work the plunger in and out.

Thanks very much for that info, Ray. I'll check it out tomorrow and advise the group.
