89 Tercel - Clutch Master issue

Hi there, thanks for your help.

I have an 89 Tercel with a history of issues with the clutch master cylinder. I had the leaky cylinder replaced several years ago, but there continued to be a very slow leak somewhere in the line, such that the fluid level would need topping up every couple of months. This didn't cause any problems and so it seemed easier to top up than to chase after it.

Now, my sister-in-law has been driving the car and she allowed the cylinder ran dry. Now even after topping up, the clutch has no pressure in the line, and one can't shift gears.

My theory is that there is a bubble in the line? Do you think this is plausible? If so, how do I fix it? And if not, what does it sound like to you?

I really appreciate any advice the group could give.

If the clutch master cylinder was completely empty, then it probably needs to have the air bled out. The process is much like bleeding the air out of brake lines.

Identifying a leak in a hydraulic clutch system should not be too difficult. There are only a few possible places for leaks. The clutch master cylinder, mounted on the firewall next to the brake master cylinder: the line between the clutch master cylinder and the slave cylinder, and the slave cylinder.

Yeah, needs bleeding. Just like the brakes. There is a bleeder on the Slave mounted to the tranny. As far as the leak, have someone pump the clutch (with the engine OFF, of course!) and take a good look. I'd start from the bottom, since the only leaks I have ever had in the clutch system have been the master and slave cylinders. Could be at the connections, though, or the line has a pinhole in it! It's all pretty straight forward.
