I got my '00 Corolla fixed. I drive 600 miles a week.
Check engine light was on Air flow sensor was bad. Replaced.
900 miles later <check engine> on again.
Bad sensors or bad firmware?
What code was stored in the computer? Did someone actually look at the sensor?

Perhaps 1st sensor was cleaned, but replacement is new. I think Toyota mechanic is just going buy the code.
