When an ad for a certain automobile says, "best fuel economy in its class", what "class" are they referring to?
Are these classes something set up by the US Department of Transportation?

There are several different definitions of "class." The U.S. EPA's categories are probably the most widely accepted, but there are also classes determined by rental car companies, J.D. Powers, insurance companies, and probably more.
