Camry four cylinder

This little engine has been a workhorse for the Toyota Camry, but I'm curious: Even though it appears to be nearly identical to the earlier models (say from about 10 or more years ago), it looks a little easier to work on. Have there been any major developments in its' mechanical design for the sake of improvement?

BIG difference - the 02 up had 157 hp and variable valve timing (VVT) - a big improvement in power without sacrificing economy and durability. Oil filter is rather a pain but better than other vehicles.
