My 1991 celica recently had its thermostat replaced along with some other work to fix its overheating problems (costing me a good 1100 bucks) and my mechanic told me that it was no longer overheating and that he drove it around to make sure. yet, once again it is having overheating issues. it is fine until i hit 4th gear and the thermometer shoots up to the halfway mark...and by the time i hit 5th gear it has hit the red zone. once i stop and turn the car off it sounds like the noise of boiling water is coming from under the hood. the car wont stay on again after that until its cooled off for a good hour. one major thing i noticed was the cooling fan NEVER goes on. other then this problem its still a good car and i do NOT want to get rid of it...because so many of the parts are new and i know that without this overheating problem the car will go on for many more miles. any suggestions on what the overheating issue could be??

There goes your engine block. Check your radiator to see if oil is in there or if there is water in the oil pan. Theres a hole somewhere. Could be some blowby in the chambers. You might have a blown head gasket. Or a crack in the cylinder head somewhere.

Have your mechanic check the operation of the cooling fan. That should have been one of the first things he checked. Also, did he install the thermostat correctly? It is a common mistake to install it upside-down. He should check to see the coolant is circulating properly. If the cooling system itself is operating properly, then the head gasket may be leaking.
Got to admit it sounds like the head gasket has died.Have you checked your fluid levels. Are you low on coolant?
Getting it into the red zone is only killing your engine if its not dead already - stop before then!
If you pull the connector off the rad temp sensor (near the bottom of the rad at one side, i think its the only connection to the rad) the fans should come on with the ignition.If they dont you have a fault with the wiring/fuse somewhere.
But IMO even if the fans werent working you shouldnt hit the red in the time it takes to get from 4th to 5th, fair amount of air cooling over the rad at that speed?
