Daytime Runnig LIghts.

I lurk on the Edmunds sienna prices paid and buying experiences DB. And someone there is claiming to be able to enable non-DRL vehicles to have DRL's.

I have 'em on my Camry, but would like to have them without having to pay for them on a Sienna. Anyone know if this can be done as claimed and how? And if it can be done on any other toyo models?

There are kits available from a lot of places to turn your lights into DRL's

You can also wire up relays to do it, but the procedure is beyond the scope of this NG.

Try Google and see what comes up. It is fairly simple but tough to describe.

Yeah, yeah! You wanted to kill them! I did too! I drove a giant oaken stake through the heart of mine and chanted ancient Runic curses against their very existence to make sure they'd never come back! Yeah!

By the way, anyone who wants to kill theirs can either read the relevant Toyota TSB (EL011-00), or email me and I'll tell you how I did it (simpler than the TSB).

Now watch closely, Grasshopper...as the flames begin!

The DRL ECU may also be used for the "Twilight Sentinel" function, so may be present even in vehicles not nominally equipped with DRLs.

Philip is probably your best authority on this subject.

Tegger, please email it to me if you would. I tried to email you but your address is not an email. TIA.

Nope, no flames from me. Darwin's Law will eventually prevail against those who remove their DRL's. Some sight challenged driver won't see your vehicle and BOOM, you are no more.

If you're depending on DRLs to keep you safe you have worse problems than DRLs will fix.

Most new cars don't even have them anymore. What will you do then?

BTW John, my friend with the recently acquired 2002 Tundra wants the DRLs deactivated too. Is there a specific bulletin on that procedure?

Have you bothered to tour a late model auto dismantler's yard to count the number of DRL equipped cars that found there way there? According to you, they shouldn't be there. But of 7 late model Jettas I looked (needed a couple of interior parts), 4 were there due to front end collisions.

I've been running with headlights on since 1986. In some states, an Amateur Radio operator is considered an Emergency vehicle, and Emergency Vehicles must run with their headlights on at all times. . . .

It's amazing how many people don't even see you in the daytime even with full headlights on . . . .

Someone in "high" places must agree on DRL's.

Our 05 Avalon has 4 positions on the light switch

DRL off off (DRL's on) Auto On

I am now wondering if this great state of Confusion (California) will recognize DRL's as being headlights that we are required to have on if you have wipers on, regardless of visibility.

Just another great law (headlights/wipers on together) to save somebody?

If there is such a requirement in your state (Kansas?) it is not universal.

The word that you're floundering around for is SAFER...note the last two letters there...

Sharks has it right...

No, it's not universal. It was Tennessee that did it originally and they may have amended the law by now. But I was in Tennessee so much in those days, I just got into the habit of running with my lights on all the time, long before GM invented DRL's.

In 1982, they reclassed Amateur Radio into two classes, basically vanity and emergency. Amateur radio plates of both classes had a call sign on them, but the second class carried the word EMERGENCY at the bottom. These were usually vehicles with radio equipment permanently installed. All vehicles classed as emergency vehicles in Tennessee had to run with their headlights on at all times. This is about the same time they passed the wipers-on/headlights-on law there. Since I was from Arkansas and had a call sign plate and Arkansas only had one class of radio call sign plates, I thought I'd do Tennessee the courtesy of honoring their law while I was there since I had permanently installed equipment in my car at that time.

So I got in the habit of turning my headlights on as soon as I got running, and I do it to this day. Also helps when I'm in Canada, since I don't have DRL's on my Corolla.

My 04 Sienna LE came without DRLs enabled, but I found out how to do it and I now have DRL. It was a simple job, just place a dummy fuse in the DRL spot on the fuse block. I sued a 5 amp fuse.

How much did you get? I can't imagine a 5 amp fuse would have a lot of assets...

Sorry! (This coming from the KING of Fat-Fingering! ;)
