Differences in oil between US and Eurpoe

I think it was here that the differences in oil between the US and Europe were extolled in reference to Europe having longer oil change intervals. I am remembering that they have 'better' specifications in Europe. How did that work again?

There are different specs in both regions, but you can get EQUIVALENT oils in the US and Europe.

In the US we only see API and ILSAC on the bottle. So it's hard to decide when it comes to VW 502/505 and BMW LL-01/04 standards by looking at the bottle (you have to go by the manufacturer's spec). Only a subset of ACEA A3 meet BMW's strict LL-01 requirement (Group IV- V synthetics, no Group III).

For example, how's people going to know by the label that Mobil-1

5W-30 doesn't meet the BMW LL-01 yet the Mobil-1 0W-40 does? But you can use Castrol LL01 5W-30.
