Sorry, but this sounds rigged to me and a bunch of hooey.

First "a 50 mpg vehicle to them is a 40 mpg vehicle to us Yanks." means that when they are saying that the Prius only got 40 MPG for them (an unreasonably low number for anyone who knows _how to drive it_), in Us terms that number is only what, 32 MPG? That is just ridiculous and totally invalidates anything else they come up with.

Then they are comparing it to a vehicle that uses diesel fuel. Here on US22 in NJ regular gas is $3.00 and diesel is 3.98, so equivalent fuel cost is one third higher.

Sheesh. Tomes

I didn't write it, Tomes. I just posted food for thought.

The Prius? I hate the thing. The drivers are currently the worst on the road with rare exception, having supplanted mommy vans.

I don't see any worse driving with them, but they look like cockroaches...

The article says the Beemer got 41.9 MPG and the Prius got 40.1 but since diesel has more energy per gallon than gasoline (130,500 vs. 115,000 BTU/ US gallon) if you adjust the mileage down to account for the fuel energy density difference the diesel really only got 36.9 MPG or to put it another way if you do the opposite and adjust the Prius up it would be 45.5MPG. In other terms the Beemer used 3114.6 BTU per mile while the Prius used 2867.8 BTU per mile.

And I think the Prius looks just file TYVM LOL :) ...... but then again my current vehicle is a fully loaded '95 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.3L V6 which is currently averaging 21.8 MPG (5275.2 BTU per mile) per the mini trip computer.

I read a recent road report on a sports care which had the driver on the road in the Berkeley area of Kalifornia.

Twice he tried to pass a Prius driving in the right lane doing 10 under the limit. Twice the Prius immediately moved to the left lane to prevent the pass.

Now I'm not saying that one driver damns all, but from what I've observed in San Diego county, this kind of smug self-righteous attitude translates, almost 100% of the time, to Prius drivers doing just this kind of road obstruction. Whether it's due to their "wanna-be-a-cop" attitude of driving right at the limit in the fast lane, taking between three and five seconds at a stop sign or red light to actually accelerate, or maybe the stupid things just don't have a good throttle response. I don't know.

But almost all of them have no road or driving skills whatsoever. The only alternative explanation is that the vehicles themselves just provide their own handicap.

A good analysis, which provides even more fodder for those who hate the "Emperor who wears no clothes". Couple that with diesel being cheaper than regular and you've got even less reason to buy the cockroach.

NNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!! A mommy van !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-)

The only circumstance in which such a vehicle is considered "fully loaded" involves dynamite.

You can't count Californians among normal drivers. What's wrong with you?!

When I lived in Arizona, the locals just hated transplanted California drivers. They were called "Calzones"

But...but...but... I only paid $800 for it lol :-) BTW all the highways around me are a 55 limit and I set the cruise for 54 as the Chrysler "Speed control" can only be set in 2 MPH increments. The highways do have an occasional slow lane going up some of the hills and I always move over into them as soon as possible when someone is closer than a few seconds behind me. If I am in front sitting at a red light when it turns green I am always the first one through the intersection.

I was referring to it having power: driver's seat, mirrors, locks, and windows along with ABS and remote keyless entry. The only things it didn't have are things I don't want anyway such as AWD, Infinity sound, and the useless (to me) power sliding door and power liftgate.

Forgot to add that here in SE Iowa it isn't. The cheapest (Ottumwa prices) is mid grade E10 @ $3.199 a gallon while diesel is $3.809 a gallon (cheapest reported in the state)

Nah, the car accelerates just fine if one puts one's foot down. It is the choice of the driver. Tomes

Prices seen today (I had noticed this and not making this up) : Here on US22 in NJ regular gas is $3.00 and diesel is 3.98, so equivalent fuel cost per gallon is one third _higher_. Tomes

I'm a total sucker for that crap. That's how I ended up buying a Subaru Loyale ('91, I think). The only Subaru that was considered a total lemon! I don't consider Subarus bad cars, though. Just that particular model. We found out very quickly why the car had so few miles on it. It seldom moved.

LOL (I can laugh - I didn't own the thing! ) - certainly a logical reason.

Sure, mock my pain.

It's someone else's pain now, though. The dealer sold it before we traded it for my Echo.

Just went to the newspaper article, looking for the BMW's cost: "...the cheapest option at £27,190". Currency-wise, what is it these days, up around $1.90 - $2.00 to the pound maybe?? Which means the initial cost (sans taxes) of each car would be ~$53K vs. ~$25K (going middle-of-the-road on the Prius pkgs.). Hmmmm...
