Low-RPM hesitation: 1990 Camry V6

When cruising very slow, with just a light touch on the accelerator, the engine kicks in and out, as if it's fuel starved. I also notice that, when I accelerate fast from stop, there is a quick hesitation. Wondering if there may be a throttle position sensor or something that needs minor adjustment. Thanks folks!

A bad throttle position sensor would not cause the problems you are describing.

Some things to check that might cause those problems:

clogged air filter crack or hole in the black plastic intake tube between the air filter and throttle body vacuum leak incorrect ignition timing worn or incorrect spark plugs bad spark plug wires worn or incorrect rotor or distributor cap clogged idle speed control valve clogged fuel injector(s)

Hi. I have a 1986 Camry with a 2SE 2.0L engine, and the idle sometimes drops (surges) 300 - 400 RPM, sounding like it wants to quit almost. If the idle control valve is clogged, is it serviceable or does it need replacing? I am also looking at buying a 90 - 92 Camry. Are both the I4 and V6 engines DOHC? I have a motorbike with DOHC, and valve (shim) adjustment is a major operation. Do both these engines use shims, and do you have to take the cams out to replace the shims? I know some engines you do, and some you don't. Thanking you in advance, Herb Kruschke Calgary, Canada

If the idle control valve is clogged, a shot of carburetor cleaner may free it up.

Both the I4 and V6 engines are DOHC. IIRC, both engines use shims and shims can be replaced without removing the cams.
