Magic Carpet Ride

Woohoo bubaloo! On Wednesday I went to St. Louis (100 miles away) and bought a brand new '06 automatic Camry LE with carpeted floor mats (MSRP= $21,141) for $17,900 plus $65 doc. fee. What a deal! Toyota's $500 rebate really helped.

Local Columbia dealer wouldn't budge: $18,800 out-the-door. But Wolfe Toyota in St. Louis started a fever (A FEVER!) among dealers in St. Louie. Wolfe has had a dealership in Kansas City for years, but about 2 years ago they also opened one up in Saint Louis.

Fusz Toyo and Seeger Toyo both told me they'd match Wolfe's sale price of 18.2 out-da-doe, something they refused to do when I called'em over the phone days earlier from Columbia. Originally Fusz and Seeger also wanted about 18.7. But by the end of negotiations, Seeger went the extra mile: 17,900. Deal!

I saved more than $800 over my local dealer's price--and I believe the locals were giving me INVOICE Price minus the $500 rebate, a good deal too really. But the competition in Saint Louis was fierce! And I must credit Wolfe Toyota's sale price for that, even though I didn't buy from'em in the end. (Wolfe didn't have a SILVER JAPANESE Camry. They only had Aspen Green and Grey from Japan.)

On the way back to Columbia, the car floated over the road like a magic carpet! That was a Smooth and Quiet ride. I'm thinking I'm doing 55 mph. I look down at the speedometer, and I'm actually doing 75. Nice.

My only complaint is having to adjust my head everytime I want to see the speed, because the steering wheel blocks the speed-o-meter. Better ergonomics needed....

It does have tilt. I'll see if that improves the view. Thanks (The old Tercel didn't have any of these new fangled thangs.)

The funny thing about my price negotiations with the various dealerships in Columbia and Saint Louis is that most tried to convince me that the special 18.2 sale price at Wolfe Toyota for the LE wasn't real.

One St. Louis dealer told me over the phone two weeks ago that Wolfe's sale price included the $400 rebate for very recent and soon-to-be college grads. Which wasn't true, but he had me so convinced I had to call Wolfe again to get reassurance.

My local dealer that wouldn't budge from

18.8 (Invoice minus rebate) said "Sure, you can buy a Camry for 18.2--sure you can," implying that the 18.2 was phony. "But when you get there, you'll see that something is *different*--it'll be a Standard car instead of an LE, or something different."

One salesman got so P.O.'ed he started yelling over the phone.

Wolfe told me all the dealerships hate them, so much so that most won't usually do dealer trades with Wolfe.

Funny that the dealership that claimed two weeks ago that Wolfe's 18.2 price was fake was willing to match it when I got to Saint Louis on Wednesday. I shoulda asked him "Why would you match a *fake* price!" Damn mofo's will say anything. [chuckle]

Anyhow, in Saint Louis, I would recommend Wolfe Toyota and Seeger Toyota. Seeger gave me the 17.9 without ever lying to me. But I know I wouldn't have gotten the 17.9 without Wolfe's

18.2 sale. Everybody wanted about 18.8 before Wolfe came along.

I test drove a 2006 LE and I too found it hard to see the speed-o-meter. Other than that it is a great car...handled bumps, curves neatly. I was quoted 21,200 by the salesman but I offered my bid of 17K which was immediatly counter offered with 18K+TTL. It was really tempting and I was about to take it if he would come down a couple fo

100s from 18K.

After counsulting with a friend about this offer, I asked him to give me a OTD(out the door) price. He came back with:

18,000 + 300(tint) + 1800(Environmental protection fee). The OTD price came to $21,000. I was really pissed off at the deal. I knew these guys would agree to your offer but then add extra fees like this one.

Congrats on your new Camry. Part of the reason they gave you such a good deal is probably due to the redesign next model year. I bought mine

01 right b4 the last redesign and got a good deal, but not as good as yours.

Mine is still going strong at 94k and as hard as I try I can't find an excuse to buy a new one. Dayum...maybe.. 2011?? By then they'll be hybrid hydrogen fuel cells combined with solar power (taking advantage of the advanced golobal warming). CP
