Obama probably owes the unions a big favor, in the same way the Bush family owes the Saudis, and most presidents owe the defense industry.

What unions essentially want is to get rid of the general election when the primary is won by a majority. Right now even if 100% of the workers at a company petition for a union vote, there still has to be a second election for unionization, and in meantime companies have been known to drag their feet and use intimidation against workers to prevent unionization. Under the reform plan, workers maintain the secret ballot but need to vote only once, not twice, to approve or reject unionization.
