There no such thing as an "original Birth Certificate on file!" In the US what is on file is the pertinent information of ones birth, as sent to the state by the hospital. That information, like the information on property deeds is a public record, a copy of which is mailed to the parents of record.
It seems odd that a good investigative reporter can not find a RECORD of his birth, in the state where he was born. Even if the person requests a copy the original information remains in the archive records. To change any of the information in the original birth record, requires a court order, before the birth record can be amended. If say the spelling of a name is corrected, or changed, the original remains part of the record. I E Joseph ones ne Joe Jones born 1/18/75 ne 11/18/75
